Week in Review (Week 2 - September 9-13)

Hi Family and Friends,

We had a fun filled week of learning, laughing and fun!

We typically start our mornings with our morning meetings then move to word work. Word work is a time where we are able to practice our spelling. We have been reviewing letter sounds from grade one and the kids have been doing a excellent job sounding out and spelling new and unfamiliar words. We have reviewed the three different sounds that the letter "A" can make, as well as the sounds "S", "T" and I can make. if you are looking for additional practice with spelling or word recognition please see the additional resources page for additional sight word practice.

In Math we continued our inquiry into patterns. The students have a strong base understanding of patterns, being able to make different 3-5 element patters as well and being able to recognize what the pattern is. We are going to move on to more challenging number patters next week as well as explore patterns in the outdoors.

In Social Studies we discussed our community and our personal identities. We brainstormed, drew and wrote about all the things that make our community what it is. We also used the book "This is how we do it"as a way to connect to our personal identities. We have an eclectic group of students that have many different celebrations and traditions. We wrote about our favorite celebrations that we participate in. I really enjoyed getting to know more about all of the students and their different family traditions.

In Science we started our first unit of Magnetism! We got the opportunity to explore how magnets work as well as test magnets around the classroom. Next week we will start learning about how and why they work!

We had the opportunity to explore the learning commons and courtyard with Ms. Hinder this week. There are so many different things we can do in these spaces, from math activities to writing and wellness activities. When asked about how we feel in the learning commons, one student said "I feel calm".

We also had a lot of fun doing art this week! We made a class alphabet out of items that we gathered from outside. It turned out amazing and is now up on the wall. We also read the book "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. We had a great discussion about trying our best and taking risks and created our own dots to act as our reminder for doing the best we can!

Lastly we had our Terry Fox Run yesterday. We learned about Terry Foxs' Marathon of hope, running a marathon a day for 143 days. He inspired us to persevere through hard times and challenges as we ran to continue his journey across Canada.
