Week in Review Week 10 (November 4-8) "We Remember"

Hi Everyone,

Remembrance Day

This was a sombre week as one of the main focus' was learning about remembrance day. We started the week seeing what we knew about Remembrance day, and I was surprised to see that we knew quite a bit. We had a strong understanding that it was about soldiers that passed away in the war. This week we examined the significance of the poppy, and why it is used to represent Remembrance day. We learned that the poppy grew on the battlefields of France during the war which brought hope to the people. We also examined the poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McRae. We learned that the poem was about remembering, hope and thankfulness. We must always remember the soldiers who fought for us and the freedoms and opportunities that we have because of it. Lastly we learned a little bit about World War 1, how and why it was started.

To conclude our learning of Remembrance day, we created a piece of art. We brainstormed words that were connected to Remembrance day, and mindfully drew them in the petals of our poppies. We used chalk pastel to color our poppies.

Word Work

This week in word work, we focused on the graphemes "ow" and "ou". There are three main sounds that these graphemes can make. We learned that both graphemes can make an "ow" sound like in the words; shower, flower, about and house. We also learned that these graphemes can make an "o" sound like in the words; window, yellow, four and your. Lastly we learned that the the "ou" grapheme can also make an "oo" sound like in the words; group, coupon and tour. ]

Math

This week in math we started addition! Many of the things we have been doing in class have been practicing our addition and mental math, however this week we learned/reviewed a formal addition strategy. We looked at 2 digit by 1 digit addition problems such as:
We all have personal strategies such as counting on and using a number line to figure out what the sum is, however an additional strategy that we discussed was adding the ones first, then the tens. This will be important as we get into addition with regrouping! We were able to practice this skill as a part of our Math Centres this week. We had the opportunity to practice addition alongside practicing our doubles facts, mental math as well as our place value!

Science

This week we presented our magnet toys that we created to our classmates! This was a great opportunity to practice our presenting skills and we did a wonderful job. Following this we were tasked to reflect about our toys. An ability to write and reflect about something shows a deeper understanding and connection to ones learning. We were tasked to reflect on questions such as: How could you make it better? How did you work with your group? How would you self assess yourself based on the success criteria?

This is something we will continue next week!

Social Studies

In social studies, we are continuing our picture project that we have been doing with Ms. Hinder. Following brainstorming our adjectives and verbs for the different aspects of nature last week, we listened to the audio book entitled "If you're not from the prairies" by David Bouchard. Listen below
The story follows a pattern:
We are using this template to create our own compilation of stories from the prairies. Stay tuned as we complete our project next week!

That is all for now. Just a reminder, there is no school Monday November 11th. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at mdnishimura@cbe.ab.ca.

Have a great weekend!
