Week in Review Week 18 (January 20-24) Igloo's

Hi Everyone,

My apologies that there was no week in review last week.

Social Studies/Science

This week we began our inquiry into the Arctic region of Canada. We have come to learn that the Inuit people who are a First Nations group, were the first people to settle in the Arctic region. This week we took a look into where they lived. We learn that the traditional house of the Inuit people was the Igloo. The Igloo is a hemisphere shaped living quarter built out of snow. Many of us were confused as to how a home made of snow could be inhabitable, however we learned that the Igloo is a great insulator that keeps the warm air in and the cold air out. After learning about the Igloo, we made our own! We started our new documentation panels which will chronicle our learning of the Arctic!

Math

We have continued our practice of 2 digit by 2 digit addition problems and we are becoming more efficient and accurate with our solving of problems. This week we started looking at word problems and understanding how to read and interpret word problems. We were able to create our own word problems for our friends to solve using a format of:

If _______ had ______  _______ and _______ had ______ _____, how many do they have all together?

Buddies

We had an opportunity to visit our Grade 4 buddies this week! They had been working on building vehicles in their class and were really excited to show us about their learning!

We also participated in some Lunar New Year activities with them! We learned that the Lunar New Year was occurring this weekend and found out that this based on the Chinese Zodiac, that this was the year of the rat. We heard a traditional folk tale of how the 12 animals were chosen for the zodiac and had an opportunity to build lanterns. Lanterns symbolize a wish for a bright future!

Gym

We have been participating in gymnastics the past two weeks with Mr. Hartman. It has been a lot of fun exmploring the different centres/activities in the gym

That's all for now. As always if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at mdnishimura@cbe.ab.ca.

Best regards,

Mr. N
