Buddies/Social Studies
We had done a tremendous job learning about the Bison prior to the winter break. Ms. Hinder guided us in a exploration that included social studies, math and english. We created our beautiful documentation panels which have been hanging from the roof of the class. Our final piece of the exploration was sharing our learning! We had the opportunity to be joined by our buddies this week and shared our learning about the Bison. We prepared by reviewing and writing our learning and practicing with Ms. Hubbs' class. We did an amazing job sharing our learning and had a great time connecting with our Grade 4 buddies in Ms. Leung/Mr. Hartman's and Ms. McMillan's grade 4 class'.
WOW Writing
This week in WOW writing, one of our prompts were to challenge ourselves to set goals for the year. We learned about the importance of setting goals as it helps up to grow smarter. Our goals ranged from becoming better readers and writers to being more helpful at home. Ask your child what their goal they set was!
Word Work
This week in word work we went over the "ey" grapheme. We learned that it is typically found at the end of works. We also learned that there are two sounds that "ey" can make. "Ey" can make the "e" sound like in the words hockey, honey and Mickey. The second sound "ey" can make is an "a" sound like in the words grey, and survey.
Math
We started the week with a fun challenge, tasking the students to find 20 different ways to make the number 20 using cuisenaire rods. We found many different ways using various combinations of smaller rods. Following this, we created number sentences to represent the values we added to get to 20.
Following this, we began reviewing addition from before the winter break. We practiced adding 2 digit by 2 digit numbers. Our memories were sharp as we did an amazing job with our addition. We are working on identifying ones and tens in numbers and then using that knowledge to add in our addition questions.
Circle Friday
This week we started Circle Friday! Circle Friday is an opportunity for student to connect with different teachers and students in the school. Everyone was assigned a different teacher in the school and during the time, goes to their class. The intentions around Circle Friday is to allow students to develop a greater sense of belonging in the school by allowing students to get to know other teachers and students. We had a great time with our Circle Friday groups!
Mart (Math/Art)
This week we worked on our shading with 3D Geometric shapes. We learned how to use a light source and draw a shape as if there was a shadow. We had a lot of fun doing this!
That is all for now. Next week looks to be another cold week. Please make sure that your children are coming to school dressed warm with a winter jacket, toque/hat and gloves!
Hope you have a great weekend. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to e-mail me at mdnishimura@cbe.ab.ca.
