This week we were very fortunate to have "Rocks and Rings" come to our school. Rocks and Rings is a Phys Ed program that teaches students the game of Curling which is a very popular winter sport in Canada. This game is usually played on ice. There are two teams with the main objective of trying to get their stones to the "button" or the middle of the circle. Players will have brooms and sweep the ice to get their stone to travel faster and curl. We had a lot of fun playing and learning about the game this week.
Word Work
This week in word work, we worked on the graphemes "ay" and "ai". Both of these graphemes make the "a" sound. We learned that the "ay" grapheme is usually found at the end of words, while the "ai" grapheme is found in the beginning and middle. We were able to practice these sounds in words such as Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, hallway, holiday, rainbow, upstairs, airplane, and waiting. Science
In Science this week we continued exploring hot and cold temperatures. Infusing the math that we have been doing with statistics and graphing, we decided to keep track of and record the daily temperatures. We have learned how to use our thermometres and have been keeping track of the temperature on a line graph. We are learning how to read the graphs and comparing daily temperatures to see if it is warmer or colder than before.
Social Studies
We have had one overarching question throughout the study of the Buffalo. "What is the difference between a Buffalo and a Bison?"
Finally, we have solved this big problem. Thanks to Ms. Hinder and a video we found online, we learned yesterday that the animal we have actually been learning about is the BISON!!! We learned that the Bison have smaller heads and horns, while the buffalo have longer horns and smaller heads. They are a similar species but that there are no Buffalo in North America. I shared with the students that I did not even know what the difference was until we found this video. This goes to show that we are all learning and growing!
Math
This week in math we returned to using cuisenaire rods. We created buffalo with our rods and were tasked to determine the value of our Buffalo. This was a great review for us as we haven't explored the cuisenaire rods in a while. We were working on adding using expanded form to show that our numbers are made up of smaller numbers. This will help us to gain a more holistic understanding of numbers and make adding and subtracting much easier.
Buddies
This week, we started buddies with Ms. McMillan's Grade 4 TLC class! They came to visit us and we got to know them while reading and sharing our love of books! We are excited to continue to build a friendship with our new buddies!
Art
Lastly, we made some fun art connecting the different seasons. We utilized watercolour pencil crayons, drawing one half of our page warm colours and the other half cold colours. We painted a tree on top with half of the tree being decorated for the winter and half being decorated for the summer.
Well that is all for now. Next week is the last week of school before the holidays. Thursday December 19th will be the last day of school, and school will resume on Monday January 6th.
