Week in Review Week 11 (November 12-15) "If you're not from the Prairies"

Hi Everyone,

Social Studies

In social studies this week, we completed our writing inspired by the David Bouchard book "If you're not from the prairies". We used our template of

while adding adjectives to our writing to create our piece inspired by pictures that were taken outside. Ms. Hinder has made a wonderful display in the learning commons to showcase all our hard work!

We also started a new inquiry in social studies around the buffalo. We used thought trackers to record our interesting facts and information we had watching a video about the buffalo. Following this, we learned about what it means to ask insightful questions, and using a question matrix we made questions about what we are wondering around the buffalo.

Metis Week

This week was Metis Week! As part of our ongoing learning and infusion of First Nations ways of knowing and understanding, we celebrated Metis Week. We learned that the Metis people are a group of group of people who have both First Nations and European ancestry. The Metis people inhabited the prairies! Through our exploration this week, we learned that the culture was an infusion of both the European and First Nations. We heard country music and fiddling, but we also saw beautiful beaded artwork. On Friday we read a traditional Metis story of how the moon came to be and were inspired to create our own pointillism art inspired by nature.

Word Work

In word work this week, we worked on a couple different sounds. We worked on the letter k. We were familiar with the "k" sound like in the words kite, king and work. But we learned this week about the silent k at the beginning of words such as in the words know, knight and knee. We also reviewed the "sh" and "ch" sounds this week.

Science

This week in science, we started a new unit of Hot and Cold Temperatures. We started the week asking ourselves what we know and want to know about hot and cold temperatures. Following this we started a visual journal page identifying things that we know to be hot and cold.

Math

This week in math we continued with our Math centres. We have been doing an amazing job adding 2 digit by 1 digit numbers, so this week we learned about adding 2 digit by 2 digit numbers without regrouping. We followed the same principle of adding our ones first, but following this we now add all the numbers in the tens column. We will continue with our work on addition throughout the following weeks.
Upcoming Dates

That is all for now. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to e-mail me at mdnishimura@cbe.ab.ca.

Have a great weekend!

Mr. N
