Week Review (Week 1 - September 3-6)

Hi Family and Friends

It was an amazing first week of school getting to know all of the new friends in the class. We did a lot of fun activities to get to know each other while establishing ourselves back at CJM.

The school has gone through some amazing changes as we have embraced a greater focus on nature and the outdoors. The Learning Commons and Courtyard have been transformed to allow for nature based exploration. We discussed all of the different learning opportunities we have in these new spaces such as art, math and writing.

We also participated in a "Sit Spot". A sit spot is a way to connect with nature and explore our environment and community. We noticed things using our senses (sight, hearing, smell and touch) and connected with our thoughts. After connecting with our sit spot, we shared and reflected upon our experiences. We will return to our Sit Spots many times throughout the year and examine the many changes to we notice.

We also started our first unit of math, which is patterns. We examines and discussed where we see patterns in the world. We find patterns in colors, shapes and numbers. We also made patterns using sound and rhythm. We had an opportunity to explore different math manipulative to see what we know about patterns and came up with some amazing things!

These were some of the fun things that we did this week. Next week we will continue our learning of patterns as well as beginning our exploration of our identity and the prairies as well as our first unit in Science, which is Magnetism.

Well, that is all for now. I hope your children had as much fun as I did this past week. I am so excited to take this journey through grade 2 with them and I can't wait to see how much they grow. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to e-mail me at mdnishimura@cbe.ab.ca.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Best Regards,

Mr. N
