Week in Review 22 (February 18-21) - Soapstone

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend! Although this was a short week, it was filled with lots of excitement.

Social Studies

After researching about our Arctic animals, we created google slides and had the opportunity to present our research to our fellow classmates as well as the Grade 2 TLC classes. This was a great opportunity to practice our presenting and speaking skills with our friends at the school!

After conducting our research, we learned about Inuit soapstone carving. We learned that this is a traditional art form of the Inuit people. Soapstone is used and carved to represent day to day things for the Inuit people. We thought that this would be a great opportunity for us to try our luck at soap(stone) carving. Thank you to all the families that brought in bar's of soap. We started with a drawing/template of our animal. We then traced that animal into our bar of soap and started carving the shape. We needed to use patience and precision to carve out the fine details in the animal. It took some time, however everyone was able to create their animal and had lots of fun doing it!

Math

We continued our practice of subtraction in Math. The past few weeks we have been using our base ten blocks to represent our subtraction problems. However this week we transitioned to drawing our base ten blocks. We also worked on a traditional algorithm method of subtracting, subtracting our ones then our tens.

Book Club

This week we started book clubs in grade 2! Book clubs are a great opportunity to connect with others, reflect and develop literacy skills while engaging in the Joy of Literacy! Students have been placed in groups and are finding different books to read. We are learning different jobs/ways to engage in reflecting upon books. This week we focused on making connections to the books we read. We are trying to make connections to our own experiences (Text to Self) and also what we see in the world (Text to World)

Thats all for know. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to e-mail me at mdnishimura@cbe.ab.ca.

Have a great weekend!

Mr. N
