Week in Review Week 13 (November 25-29) "Documentation and Parent Teacher Conferences"

Hi Everyone,

Word Work

This week in word work, our focus was the grapheme "ea". We learned that we can the "ea" grapheme can make three different sounds. The most common sound that we hear is the "e" sound like in the words read, teacher and season. We also learned that "ea" can make an "a" sound as exemplified in the words break, great and steak. The last sound that "ea" can make is the "eh" sound like in the words head, weather, ocean and healthy.

We had a fun assembly this week brought to us by the Earth Rangers. The Earth Rangers are an animal and environmental conservation organization. They brought in many different animals to show us and shared with us how to become Earth Rangers. Cards were sent home to become Earth Rangers.

Science

In science this week, we continued our hot and cold thermometre experiment. We tested the room temperature, body temperature, hot water, cold water and ice water. We learned that the average room temperature is around 23 degrees Celsius. We also learned that the average body temperature is 37 degreed Celsius! Our ice water measured at 0 degrees Celsius which lead us into a discussion about the freezing temperature of water!

Social

This week in social, we continued our buffalo exploration. We discussed and learned about the importance of rocks to First Nations people in the prairies. To many, rocks are a non-living aspect of the world. However to First Nations people, rocks are a special part of their living world. Rocks and the land tell important stories of the history of the area. The land holds a great deal of knowledge and wisdom. We have taken this perspective of thinking to share our knowledge. We created rocks to add to our documentation panels and shared our knowledge of the buffalo. Our facts and knowledge ranged from the buffalo's ability to jump 1.8 meters high, to the buffalos cleaning themselves in the dirt to get rid of bugs!

Social/Math

This week we transitioned in math to shapes, and found a great connection between the buffalo and math. We learned about polygons. Polygons are any 2D shapes formed with straight lines. Polygons are grouped into different amounts of sides and we learned the different names for some.

Triangle - 3 sides
Quadrilateral - 4 sides
Pentagon - 5 sides
Hexagon - 6 sides

We used this knowledge and connected it to a geometric picture of the buffalo. We were tasked to color each different polygon one color. Following this, we used a tracking sheet to record how many of each polygon we had on the buffalo. We recorded the total value as well as represented it with tallies.

Our documentation panels have been growing with our knowledge of the buffalo, and we finally placed them around the class for all to see. The panels look amazing and we are so proud of our work. I hope everyone is excited to see them during parent teacher conferences!

Parent teacher interviews are next week (Thursday October 5th and Friday October 6th). Information has been sent out on School Messenger. Please sign up for an interview time!

That is all for now. As always if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me at mdnishimura@cbe.ab.ca!

Have a great weekend!
